Puerto Rico in September?
Don’t mind if I do. Which I will do. If anyone in the DC area is interested, cheapcaribbean.com is currently having a sale—4 days, 3 nights in the Caribe Hilton San Juan resort including flight for $389, from DC, for any date for August 15-October 16. I’ve booked through this site before and it’s one of the best out there for amazing deals to the Caribbean.

“I beg young people to travel. If you don’t have a passport, get one. Take a summer, get a backpack and go to Delhi, go to Saigon, go to Bangkok, go to Kenya. Have your mind blown. Eat interesting food. Dig some interesting people. Have an adventure. Be careful. Come back and you’re going to see your country differently, you’re going to see your president differently, no matter who it is. Music, culture, food, water. Your showers will become shorter. You’re going to get a sense of what globalization looks like. It’s not what Tom Friedman writes about; I’m sorry. You’re going to see that global climate change is very real. And that for some people, their day consists of walking 12 miles for four buckets of water. And so there are lessons that you can’t get out of a book that are waiting for you at the other end of that flight. A lot of people—Americans and Europeans—come back and go, ohhhhh. And the light bulb goes on.”
-
I try to tell people this all the time when they say they’re “jealous” that I get to travel. It’s not rocket science—if you truly want to make it happen, then you’ll make it happen. And you should want to.

I have mixed feelings—I want badly to return to Perú, and I especially want my parents to go as well. But, Bali is next on my horizon of new places to visit, and a trip next year with some girlfriends is looking quite plausible. I don’t know what to hope for at this point, but I think I might be leaning toward Bali, but like I said—if my Mom and Dad actually take the initiative and want to actually plan a trip to Perú, there is no way I can decline—hell no, I’m not letting them go alone! Decisions, decisions…

A girl weaving a carpet in Fes, Morocco. Carpet weaving is an important tradition in the Moroccan Berber culture; here, an entourage of women weaves an elaborate, sophisticated system of designs into a large carpet that can take up to three months to complete, working around the clock.

Anonymous Person: “Great photos, your camera is awesome!” Me: “Ah, yes, my camera is quite the photographer, he’s really savvy with the right composition and exposure, and his use of focus and depth of field are impeccable. I’ll send him your regards, he’ll really appreciate the recognition— he’s so used to me getting all of the accolades just because I handle him and prepare all the settings and sit there waiting for the right time to push his silly button.” ”- THIS IS WHY I GAVE UP PHOTOJOURNALISM AS A CAREER. (Actually, I gave it up because it’s pretty much a dead career and you can’t get anywhere unless you’re in bed with someone who has an in, but, that’s beside the point here.) …I’m just going to keep traveling the world when I can and taking pictures that I love because it doesn’t actually matter what anyone says about them (although compliments are appreciated), because my pictures are for me, and I cherish them because I took them and they were my experiences, and I don’t have to live vicariously through someone else’s photos of that place, because I was there.
